about

Bison of the Plain was written long ago, after composer M.J. Berger attended a youth gathering on the next wave of protest after the Viet Nam war. Someone suggested the environment would be the issue of the future, whereupon the composer asked whether that meant we will be writing songs like “Bison of the Plain, great bison, and all that…”. No one objected to that idea, and by year’s end, Bison of the Plain was premiered in Chicago, and throughout prairie lands of the midwestern plains.

The song is now revived and revised years later through the formidable talents of lead singer Gregorstan Wolforfox. The song is in contemporary classical style – if there is such a thing. It requires considerably more vocal acrobatics and tonal acuity than is usually provided by today’s pop vocal artists. Gregorstan’s performance has lifted the song from its initial tentative foray, out of the wilderness and into a powerful confirmation that, as was predicted by the youth group long ago, the environment has truly captivated new generations that followed.

After the song was originally written for piano and voice alone, the orchestration has been beefed up for this revision by The Dog Pack band using authentic orchestral instrument sounds from the Vienna Symphonic Library.

lyrics

BISON OF THE PLAIN

Bison of the Plain
Great Bison
They’re trying to replace you with livestock
The stages on their trail to the west
Have no regard for your sovereignty

There had been some uncanny sounds from mineshaft number 319
The foreman made us go down there next day
Well we sent a squad to scout it out and they deployed some nitro
The bison by mistake was in the way

The foreman made us go down there that day
The bison by mistake was in the way

Great Scott! How did we get here?
Our craft I believe had been grounded
Great Scott! How did we get here?
The ogre of predestiny was upon us

Bison of the Plain
Great Bison
You’re being crowded out and stepped on
The people in their avarice for power
Have forgotten where you came from
